Requirement analysis
Product Analysis
Key Points of the Requirement
Define the lighting technology (halogen, HID, or LED), the target vehicle make, model, and year, and whether the beam pattern is for left-hand or right-hand traffic. Specify the homologation requirement (ECE R112/R148 or FMVSS 108), low-beam and high-beam output targets, and functions such as daytime running light, turn signal, position light, and dynamic indicators. State housing and lens materials, anti-fog and ventilation provisions, connector interfaces, leveling motor and wiring inclusion, and IP-rating expectations for dust and water ingress.
Cost Structure Analysis
The main cost drivers are LED chips and driver modules (or halogen/HID bulbs and ballasts), optical design and lens elements, housing injection molding and hard coating for the polycarbonate lens, reflectors with vacuum metallization, sealing, and photometric testing. Complex lens and housing tooling is expensive and is normally quoted as a separate one-time charge. Thermal management components, certification testing, and protective packaging add measurably to unit cost, while higher volumes spread tooling and certification costs across more units.
Estimated Cost Range
For a full LED headlight assembly for a mainstream passenger car, excluding tooling, certification fees, freight, and tax, indicative factory pricing is approximately $48–$90 per unit for 100–499 units, $36–$68 for 500–1,999 units, $27–$52 for 2,000–4,999 units, and $21–$42 at volumes above 5,000 units. Halogen assemblies typically fall in the $9–$22 range. Final quotations depend on light source, photometric performance, feature content, and commercial terms.
Procurement Considerations
Prioritize manufacturers with photometric laboratories and experience passing ECE or FMVSS homologation for the target market, backed by IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 systems. Request photometric test reports for both beams, IP67 or equivalent ingress test results, thermal-cycling and UV-resistance data for the lens, and solder-joint reliability evidence for LED modules. Provide OE samples, vehicle mounting points, and connector drawings, and confirm tooling ownership, homologation certificate transfer terms, warranty, packaging, Incoterms, and delivery destination. Samples should be checked for beam pattern, brightness, color temperature consistency, sealing, and appearance before production approval.
