Requirement analysis
Product Analysis
Key Points of the Requirement
Identify the heat sources to be managed (joint motors, battery pack, compute module, or power electronics), the total heat load in watts, and the target component temperatures. Define the cooling approach—passive heat sinks or plates, heat pipes and vapor chambers, forced air, or liquid loops with pump, cold plate, and radiator—along with weight and volume budgets, noise limits, mounting interfaces, and the operating environment (temperature range, dust, vibration, IP rating).
Cost Structure Analysis
Costs are driven by aluminum or copper raw material, CNC machining or stamping and brazing of plates, heat pipe fabrication, and—for active systems—pumps, fans, sensors, and control electronics. Thermal simulation, leak testing, and thermal-cycling validation form a meaningful share of conversion cost. Passive solutions scale mainly with material price, while liquid loops add assembly and reliability cost that drops with volume.
Estimated Cost Range
Indicative factory pricing: passive heat sinks and heat-pipe assemblies $15–$80 per unit for 100–999 units; forced-air assemblies with fans $50–$200; complete liquid cooling loops (cold plate, pump, radiator, quick couplings) $150–$600 at 100–999 units, stepping down 20–35% above 1,000 units. Final quotations depend on heat load, materials, interface machining, and testing requirements.
Procurement Considerations
Prioritize suppliers with thermal simulation capability who can validate the design against your heat load before tooling, and who provide thermal-cycling and leak-test data for liquid systems. Confirm flatness and surface finish tolerances on mating surfaces, pump and fan MTBF figures, coolant compatibility, and bi-metal corrosion mitigation. Clarify interface drawings and mounting responsibility, prototype lead time, tooling ownership, warranty terms, packaging, Incoterms, and delivery destination.
