Requirement analysis
Product Analysis
Key Points of the Requirement
Define the conductor material (plain copper, tinned copper, or copper-clad aluminum—CCA is cheaper but higher resistance), cross-section in mm², core count, and the insulation and sheath system (PVC, XLPE, or low-smoke zero-halogen for public buildings). Specify the voltage class (450/750V or 0.6/1kV), the governing standard (IEC, GB, BS, or NEMA), flame-retardant category, and drum lengths and meter-marking requirements.
Cost Structure Analysis
Copper dominates 60–80% of cost and follows LME prices closely, so serious quotes are indexed with a copper-price adjustment formula rather than fixed long-term. Insulation compounds, stranding and extrusion, and 100% on-line spark and high-voltage testing make up the rest. CCA and aluminum conductors cut material cost dramatically but are unsuitable for many building applications.
Estimated Cost Range
Indicative factory pricing: BV single-core 1.5–2.5mm² $0.08–$0.25 per meter; 3-core sheathed power cable $0.50–$5.00 per meter by cross-section; larger power cables quoted per km with copper indexation. Volume breaks are modest beyond truckload quantities; the dominant price variable is the copper price on the quotation date.
Procurement Considerations
Prioritize manufacturers who verify 100% copper content with conductor-resistance test reports per batch (CCA substitution is the most common fraud in this category). Request insulation resistance, high-voltage withstand, and flame-retardant test data to your standard, confirm LSZH certification where required, and check meter marks and drum labeling. Clarify the copper-price adjustment basis, MOQ per item, drum packaging, Incoterms, and delivery destination.
